Gary Black joined Aegon Asset Management in June 2016 as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and is responsible for all business aspects of Aegon USA Investment Management, LLC (AUIM) and Aegon USA Realty Advisors (AURA). Prior to Aegon, he served as the Global Co-Chief Investment Officer at Calamos Investments, which acquired Black Capital, where he was CEO and Chief Investment Officer. Prior to Black Capital, Gary was Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer at Janus Capital. Before joining Janus, Gary was Chief Investment Officer of Equities at Goldman Sachs Asset Management, and before that was Head of Alliance Bernstein’s Global Institutional business. Gary has 25 years of experience in the industry. He received his MBA from Harvard Business School and earned his BS in economics from the University of Pennsylvania.
Jim Baskin, CFA, CPA, joined AUIM and its affiliates in 1996. Jim is Head of U.S. Structured Research, responsible for all structured product research in the U.S., as well as any necessary global coordination related to structured research. Prior to joining AUIM, Jim was employed with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation where he served as a Commission Bank Examiner in the Safety and Soundness Division. Jim has 27 years of industry experience and 21 years of experience with AUIM and its affiliates. Jim received his BS in finance from the University of Tennessee, and has earned the right to use the Certified Public Accountant designation and the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.
Kirk Buese, CFA, joined AUIM and its affiliates in 1987. Kirk is the Chief Investment Office (CIO) and is responsible for AUIM’s investment process and performance and oversees public and private fixed income portfolio management — including multi-sector and asset allocation funds, alternative funds, and investment and macro research — as well as AUIM’s global derivatives and hedging operations. In addition, he is a member of the Asset Aegon Management steering committee that sets global macro and asset allocation strategies (“global house views”) and has responsibility for implementation of those views in the U.S. Prior to joining AUIM, Kirk was Director of Private Placements and Public Bond Credit Research at Providian, an affiliated company; earlier still, he was a sales engineer in the Power Systems Division of General Electric Company. Kirk has 30 years of experience within the industry and with AUIM and its affiliates. Kirk received his BS in mechanical engineering from Vanderbilt University and his MBA from Indiana University. He has earned the right to use the Chartered Financial Analyst designation. Kirk is also registered as a Principal and Associated Person with the National Futures Association.
Garry Creed, CFA, joined AUIM and its affiliates in 1988. Garry is the Head of Global Credit & Sovereign Research for AUIM, and also serves in the same capacity for Aegon Asset Management, a business unit that is part of the Aegon family of companies. He is responsible for global oversight of public investment grade, public high yield, leveraged loan, emerging market, sovereign, and distressed credit research. Prior to his current role, Garry headed up Aegon’s Special Situations Group, a predecessor to the current Distressed Team. During his career he has also covered numerous industries for both investment grade and high yield in an analyst capacity. Prior to joining the Investment Team, Garry served in various accounting and administrative management capacities for AUIM and its affiliates. Garry also serves in a volunteer capacity on the board that oversees the management of Wartburg College’s endowment. Garry has 27 years of industry experience and 29 years of experience with AUIM and its affiliates. Garry received his BA from Wartburg College, his MBA from the University of Iowa, and has earned the right to use the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.
Martin Coughlan, CFA, CAIA, joined Aegon USA Investment Management, LLC (AUIM) in 2016. Martin is Head of Distribution for Aegon Asset Management U.S. His responsibilities include developing and managing the overall distribution strategy for the U.S. marketplace including institutional sales, consultant relations, client service, marketing, and product management. Martin is in charge of setting annual distribution goals, objectives, and targets while working closely with the CEO and leadership team. Prior to his current role, Martin worked as Global Head of Institutional Sales and Client Service at Westwood Management. Prior to that, he worked as a Head of Global Institutional Services at Calamos Advisors LLC where he was charged with building the firm’s global institutional client base. Before his experience at Calamos, Martin served as Client Relationship Manager at Bank of Ireland Asset Management. Martin has 21 years of industry experience and holds BComm (banking & finance) degree from the University of Dublin. Martin has earned the right to use the Chartered Financial Analyst designation, as well as the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst designation.
Jim Mautino joined AUIM and its affiliates in 2014. Jim is AUIM's Chief Compliance Officer (CCO). Prior to joining AUIM, Jim was the CCO at ClearArc Capital, Inc. (formerly known as Fifth Third Asset Management/FTAM) from 2005 through 2013. Prior to ClearArc Capital, he served as Vice President and Director of Risk and Compliance at State Street Bank and Trust. Jim has 27 years of industry experience. His experience in the compliance discipline, all within the financial sector, dates back to 1990. Jim received his BS in finance from Missouri State University, and his MBA from Rockhurst University.
Stephanie Phelps, FMLI, joined Aegon USA Investment Management, LLC (AUIM) and its affiliates in 1990. Stephanie is Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Interim Chief Risk Officer (CRO), a new position within the firm. In her role as CFO, Stephanie is responsible for cost management, financial reporting for a wide array of investment products, as well as capital and liquidity planning. In her role as Interim CRO, Stephanie will evaluate how the firm can most effectively organize and structure the newly created position. She is a member of the Aegon Asset Management U.S. management committee. Prior to joining AUIM, Stephanie worked for three years at Price Waterhouse. Stephanie has worked in various accounting and financial reporting roles at insurance companies and in asset management for 22 years. Stephanie received her BA in business from the University of Iowa, and has earned the insurance industry designation of Fellow, Life Management Institute.
Jim Schaeffer joined AUIM and its affiliates in 2004. Jim is Head of U.S. Leveraged Finance and a Portfolio Manager. Jim’s responsibilities include managing the U.S. and global high yield, emerging markets, leveraged loans, distressed assets, and fund-of-fund asset allocation portfolio management platforms. Jim is also responsible for stressed and special situation securities, and all restructuring and bankruptcy situations for AUIM. Prior to joining AUIM, Jim served as a Vice President at PPM America’s Distressed Debt and Workout Group. Jim also worked in corporate banking and investment banking positions at Wachovia Corporation, Bank of America Securities, and Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette in Chicago. Jim has 24 years of industry experience and 13 years of experience with AUIM and its affiliates. Jim received his BS in finance from Miami (Ohio) University, and his MBA from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
Werner Vetsch joined AUIM in January 2015. Werner is Senior Vice President (SVP) and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Information Technology and Operations. His operations responsibilities include securities, derivatives, limited partnership and real estate accounting and operations, middle office (investment reference data, securities and derivatives valuation and cash forecasting/modeling), client service and reporting, and shared services for the organization (project, process and data quality management). Prior to joining AUIM, Werner served as COO, Chief Compliance Officer, and Executive Director for Legal & General Investment Management America, Inc. Werner also served as an SVP with Northern Trust Company—in a variety of roles including Investment Operations Outsourcing and Global Custody—and with Bankers Trust Company, Citibank, N.A., Dillon, Read & Company, Inc., and Dean Witter Reynolds. Werner received his BA in economics from the University of Rochester and his MBA from the Belmont University Jack C. Massey Graduate School of Business.
Doug Weih, CFA, joined AUIM and its affiliates in 2000. In January 2015, Doug was named Head of U.S. Public Fixed Income, with responsibilities across a broad range of structured finance and investment grade fixed income strategies. Prior to joining AUIM, Doug was employed in the treasury and investment management areas of a nationally chartered bank before becoming a commercial real estate lender at that institution. Doug has 23 years of industry experience and 17 years of experience with AUIM and its affiliates. Doug received his BA in economics and his MBA in finance from the University of Iowa. He has earned the right to use the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.
