Managing risk and uncovering opportunities

At Aegon AM, we integrate climate change risk into our ESG analysis, look for opportunities to invest in climate change solutions and engage with companies to advocate change.

Integrating climate risk

Climate-related risks are evaluated in the firm’s proprietary ESG integration process when considered material as part of the fundamental research framework. Risks may include transition, stranded asset, regulatory and climate change-related physical risks. Utilizing their industry, country or asset class expertise, analysts identify the most material and relevant climate-related risks.

Investing in climate solutions

A number of our focused responsible investment strategies invest in climate solutions. From renewable energy and electric vehicles to green buildings, we are finding compelling opportunities to invest alongside the transition to a low-carbon economy while pursuing attractive investment returns.

Engaging for better outcomes

Aegon AM carries out individual and collaborative engagements related to climate change in an effort to improve outcomes for our clients’ portfolios and the world more broadly. By supporting collective action coordinated by Climate Action 100+, we aim to encourage the world’s largest corporate greenhouse gas emitters take necessary action. We are also working with groups such as the Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change, ShareAction and CDP to further encourage corporate action on climate. Additionally, we conduct bilateral engagements on climate change and disclosure of environmental metrics.

Our Climate Change Commitment

At Aegon AM, we are committed to helping mitigate the risk of climate change. Through engagement and firm-wide commitments, we aim to reduce the carbon impact of our business and investments.

Carbon Reduction Targets: Our operations in the Netherlands, through sharing office space with Aegon Netherlands, have set targets to half the ecological footprint of our operations by 2030, which includes reducing per-employee operational CO₂ emissions by at least 50%.

Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change: Aegon AM is an active member of the Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC) and Climate Action 100+ where we work to encourage the world’s largest corporate GHG emitters—including intensive sectors such as oil and gas, utilities and steel—take necessary action.

Dutch Government’s National Climate Agreement: Aegon AM NL signed a commitment in support of the Dutch Government’s National Climate Agreement. This agreement commits us to support our clients in understanding and reducing the carbon impact of their investments.

Paris Pledge for Action: Aegon N.V. signed the Paris Pledge for Action in 2015, committing us to taking action in support of implementing the Paris Agreement and accelerating the transformative changes needed to meet the climate change challenge.

CDP: Aegon N.V. is an investor member of the CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project). CDP encourages companies to be more open about their greenhouse gas emissions. Investors signing up to the project manage assets worth approximately $100 trillion as of 2019.
